Abbey Hill Academy

Overview

Abbey Hill Academy has taken effective action to maintain the standards identified at the previous inspection. Pupils are described as safe and happy, supported by skilled staff who have an excellent understanding of individual needs. The school provides an ambitious curriculum tailored to pupils’ special educational needs and disabilities, with a strong emphasis on preparing them for life beyond school.

Strengths

• Staff have "high expectations" and pupils benefit from an "extensive range of academic and vocational opportunities."
• Behaviour is "exemplary," with pupils being "polite, kind and respectful" and incidents dealt with swiftly.
• The curriculum is "sequenced well," ensuring pupils "learn more and know more over time" through regular revisiting of learning.
• Pupils develop independence through meaningful work experiences, such as sixth-form placements and community activities.
• Leaders are "passionate" and dedicated, with staff speaking highly of the support they receive.

Areas to improve

• The school should refine how behaviour incidents are recorded, as it does not capture follow-up actions consistently, making it difficult to identify trends or check how well incidents have been addressed.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.
