Alva Primary School

Overview

Inspectors visited Alva Primary School and Nursery Class in January 2023, identifying strengths in teamwork and the use of digital technology. However, the report highlights significant weaknesses in leadership and wellbeing, concluding that the school requires additional support and a further inspection within one year.

Strengths

• "Positive, nurturing relationships between practitioners, children and families in the nursery."
• "Effective use of digital technology to support and enrich children’s learning," which is "building their independent learning skills well."
• Teachers demonstrate a "sense of teamwork" and are "keen to improve their practice through professional learning."
• Nursery staff "work well together" to ensure a "positive early learning and childcare experience."

Areas to improve

• "Improve the strategic leadership and pace of change across the school, nursery and ASD provision" to secure better outcomes.
• "Develop a whole school positive relationships policy" to ensure staff "promote positive behaviour consistently."
• "Continue to develop approaches to teaching, learning and assessment to increase the pace of learning and raise attainment for all children."

Safeguarding

The report evaluates "Ensuring wellbeing, equality and inclusion" as "weak" for the primary stages and "satisfactory" for the nursery class, noting the need for a whole-school policy to create a "nurturing climate for learning."
