Alvie Primary School

Overview

The inspection team visited Alvie Primary School in March 2026 and found that while the school has notable strengths in relationships and leadership, significant improvements are required in teaching planning and pupil attainment. The report concludes that the school needs "additional support and more time to make necessary improvements," with a further inspection scheduled within one year.

Strengths

• Children are described as "polite, friendly" and "keen to make an effective contribution," supporting each other well and demonstrating the school’s values.
• The newly appointed headteacher has introduced "effective work" and whole-school strategies that help children demonstrate "respectful interactions" and engage with learning.
• Staff demonstrate "strong teamwork," modelling positive relationships to create "calm and nurturing learning environments."

Areas to improve

• The school must "review approaches to planning teaching" to ensure learning is progressive, regularly revisited, and well matched to children’s abilities and needs.
• Staff should "improve children’s attainment in literacy and numeracy," particularly in reading and writing, by using assessment data to identify and address gaps in learning.
• Senior leaders and the local authority must continue to "monitor and review the impact" of urgent safeguarding improvements over time.

Safeguarding

The report states that senior leaders and the local authority have worked together to take forward areas for improvement in safeguarding which "required urgent action," and they should continue to monitor the impact of this work.
