Axbridge Church of England First School Academy

Overview

The report describes a “welcoming and inclusive school” where pupils enjoy attending and feel safe. Leaders have established high expectations for behaviour and achievement, resulting in a “calm and orderly” environment with “warm and respectful” relationships between staff and pupils.

Strengths

• Pupils demonstrate a strong understanding of the school’s “Christian ethos” and values, behaving with kindness and compassion.
• The curriculum is “designed well,” with particular success in reading and mathematics; a new phonics scheme ensures children gain confidence and fluency.
• Staff provide effective support for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), ensuring they access a “broad and balanced curriculum.”
• Pupils develop their character through roles such as “buddies” and “eco team” members, fostering confidence and a sense of responsibility.
• Governors and staff work effectively as a team, appreciating the positive changes brought by the leadership.

Areas to improve

• In some subjects, teachers do not “check well enough what pupils remember,” meaning subsequent learning does not always build on prior knowledge.
• This lack of checking slows progress across the curriculum, as seen in geography where older pupils struggle to connect new learning with previous topics.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are “effective,” with a clear culture, up-to-date staff training, and appropriate checks ensuring vulnerable pupils receive necessary help.
