Bedonwell Infant and Nursery School

Overview

This is a welcoming school where pupils are happy and learn shared values such as teamwork and kindness. While early years provision is strong and safeguarding is effective, the report states that the quality of education and leadership require improvement, particularly regarding curriculum implementation in Years 1 and 2.

Strengths

• Pupils are taught about positive relationships, with bullying described as rare and resolved quickly.
• Children get off to a strong start in early years, with a broad and ambitious curriculum in subjects like mathematics.
• Effective arrangements identify and meet the needs of pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).
• Staff appreciate leaders’ consideration of their well-being and workload.
• Pupils are taught wider personal development topics, including staying safe online and managing money.

Areas to improve

• In Years 1 and 2, some pupils are not keeping up with the phonics programme and are not receiving the teaching or practice time needed to build reading accuracy.
• Teaching does not routinely implement the intended curriculum securely in Years 1 and 2, with pupils sometimes asked to complete tasks before they have the necessary knowledge and skills.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.
