Bewcastle School

Overview

Bewcastle School is described as a place where pupils are happy, polite, and well-mannered, benefiting from a ‘successful learning in a happy environment’. Leaders have successfully overhauled the curriculum to ensure coherence from early years to Year 6, with most pupils achieving well and demonstrating curiosity. The school fosters strong community links and provides a wide range of experiences that help pupils feel rooted in their local area while developing respect for others.

Strengths

• Pupils are ‘kind, thoughtful and considerate’, behaving in a ‘calm and sensible manner’ and ensuring everyone is included.
• Leaders have established an ‘effective phonics curriculum’, helping most pupils read with ‘confidence and fluency’.
• Pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities are supported well to learn the same curriculum as their classmates.
• The school offers diverse experiences, including swimming lessons, outdoor activities, and visits to local and national cultural sites.
• Staff feel valued, and leaders have prioritised staff well-being and manageable workloads.

Areas to improve

• Leaders must ensure staff receive sufficient training and support to teach and adapt subject curriculums for mixed-age classes effectively.
• In some subjects, leaders should ensure teachers provide work that deepens pupils’ knowledge to better prepare them for new learning.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective, with staff alert to signs of harm and trained to identify abuse, while pupils learn how to keep themselves safe online.
