Bower Grove School

Overview

Bower Grove School has taken effective action to maintain the high standards identified at its previous inspection, which judged it outstanding for overall effectiveness. The report confirms that the school continues to prioritise pupils’ self-esteem, well-being, and emotional development, ensuring they feel protected and enjoy attending. Leaders have successfully balanced academic learning with crucial personal and social growth, preparing pupils effectively for adulthood.

Strengths

• Staff build positive relationships and understand pupils’ behavioural and emotional needs exceptionally well, helping them manage emotions and reduce incidents of challenging behaviour.
• The curriculum is ambitious and well ordered, with subject content delivered in a logical sequence that builds pupils’ confidence and knowledge foundations.
• There is a sharp focus on early reading, with regular phonics checks and personalised interventions to help pupils become fluent and comprehensive readers.
• The school provides extensive opportunities for adulthood, including travel training, work experience placements, and vocational experiences with local colleges.
• Rigorous staff training ensures learning happens with minimal interruption, allowing pupils to regulate quickly and re-engage in class.

Areas to improve

• Adaptations to academic work and learning resources sometimes lack precision, meaning some pupils do not receive the right support to practice and develop new knowledge and skills.
