Overview

The report describes a school that ‘changes many pupils’ lives’ by providing a nurturing environment for students with complex needs and special educational needs. Leaders have established clear structures and high expectations, enabling pupils to feel safe and ready to learn.

Strengths

• Staff ‘seek to rebuild and nurture pupils to believe they belong and are safe’, supported by a trust therapy team that promotes mental health.
• The curriculum in core subjects is ‘well sequenced and carefully planned’, with a ‘highly effective phonics programme’ developing reading confidence.
• Positive behaviour support plans and skilled staff training help pupils ‘self-regulate’ and focus in lessons.
• The personal development programme is ‘well crafted’, offering opportunities for pupils to develop responsibility, teamwork, and respect for others.
• Trustees maintain ‘robust accountability systems’ and ‘rigorously challenge’ school performance data.

Areas to improve

• The curriculum in some non-core subjects requires further refinement, particularly in embedding the academic starting points from pupils’ education, health and care plans.
• Some staff lack sufficient subject knowledge, leading to tasks that do not effectively help pupils master required knowledge and skills.
