Burbage Church of England Infant School

Overview

Burbage Church of England Infant School is described as a "happy, welcoming place" where the ethos of ‘Loving; Living; Learning’ is central. Leaders are "ambitious for all pupils," ensuring an inclusive environment where staff are determined that every child, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities, receives the support needed to "thrive and achieve well."

Strengths

• The curriculum is "well-structured," with leaders identifying key knowledge and ensuring pupils can recall what they have learned.
• Teachers possess "secure subject knowledge" and effectively model new learning, using activities like ‘flashback’ in mathematics to reinforce prior learning.
• Early reading and phonics are prioritised, with teachers acting as "early reading experts" who match books to the sounds pupils know.
• Pupils with SEND access the same curriculum as their peers and receive "effective support" to succeed.
• Staff feel "happy, valued and well supported," forming a close team that prioritises workload and well-being.

Areas to improve

• In some foundation subjects, assessment procedures are not fully developed and do not always identify gaps in pupils’ knowledge.
• Teachers do not consistently use checks on pupils’ understanding to inform future teaching or next steps in learning.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective, with staff knowledgeable about local issues and leaders acting quickly to address concerns.
