Captain Shaw's CofE School

Overview

The report describes a school where pupils demonstrate "exemplary" conduct and enjoy "respectful relationships" with adults. Most pupils, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities, achieve well due to high aspirations and a curriculum that is carefully planned in most subjects.

Strengths

• Pupils show "warmth and kindness" and are "proud of their school," contributing to an outstanding culture of behaviour and attitudes.
• The curriculum in most subjects is well-structured, helping pupils develop a "strong understanding" and preparing them for future stages of education.
• Reading is a clear priority, with children receiving targeted support to become "confident and fluent readers" from Reception.
• Staff effectively use assessment data to address learning gaps, and the school accurately identifies and supports pupils with SEND.
• Personal development is supported through "rich experiences," including community action, residential trips, and clubs that develop talents.

Areas to improve

• In a "small number of subjects," the school has not yet identified the most important information pupils should learn, limiting the breadth of understanding.
• The school should refine its curriculum planning in these specific subjects to ensure pupils are "well prepared for each stage of their education."

Safeguarding

The report states that "the arrangements for safeguarding are effective."
