Central Street Infant and Nursery School

Overview

The report describes a school with a "strong sense of community" where pupils experience an ethos of "care, kindness and calm". While the overall effectiveness is rated as Good, the early years provision requires improvement due to a curriculum that is not clearly defined in all areas.

Strengths

• Pupils feel safe, trust adults, and actively help each other, with bullying being rare.
• Leaders have created an "ambitious curriculum" with clear sequencing in foundation subjects like geography and mathematics.
• Reading is a priority, with a consistent phonics curriculum and books that "closely match the sounds that they have been taught".
• Pupils develop a strong sense of respect and understand how to treat different people equally.
• Clear systems identify pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), who are "well supported" and integrated with peers.

Areas to improve

• The early years curriculum in some areas is "not clearly enough defined", leading to inconsistent support and missed opportunities to identify children falling behind.
• Subject leaders lack a clear understanding of how early years learning provides a "strong foundation" for future learning in key stages 1 and 2.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective, with clear reporting systems, regular staff training, and a culture where all adults understand their role in keeping pupils safe.
