Overview

The report states that the school has made “insufficient progress” since the original inspection in 2020. Consequently, Education Scotland will liaise with North Lanarkshire Council regarding the school’s capacity to improve and will return for a further inspection within six months.

Strengths

• Staff and pupils report having “confidence” in the leadership of the recently appointed permanent headteacher.
• Young people report feeling “cared for and supported” and are enthusiastic about leadership opportunities afforded to some.
• Teachers have improved the way they identify young people’s additional support needs, with support plans now in place for those who need them.
• There is evidence of some improvement in identifying additional support needs, and weekly personal and social health lessons are being consulted on with young people.

Areas to improve

• Strategic leadership of change needs improvement, with a requirement for a “clear, coordinated whole school plan” involving staff, young people, and parents.
• Approaches to learning, teaching, and assessment must be more focused on individual needs to reduce variability in teaching quality and address disruption from a minority of pupils.
• Attainment has not sufficiently improved, particularly at S4, and there is a need to improve school leaver destinations and attendance.

Safeguarding

The report notes that young people report feeling “cared for and supported” in school and highlights the implementation of a programme of professional learning on inclusive practice to support young people with barriers to learning.
