Overview

Pupils enjoy their time at Clyst Vale Community College, developing a “strong sense of community” and maintaining respectful relationships with staff and peers. Leaders have successfully raised standards since the previous inspection, fostering a positive environment where most pupils strive to realise the school’s values of “Respect, Participate, Learn”.

Strengths

• Staff use “strong subject knowledge to explain new learning clearly” and check that pupils understand new concepts and previous topics.
• The school offers a “thorough careers programme” that helps pupils move on to suitable further study, training, or work.
• Pupils develop as active citizens, understanding “universal human rights” and enthusiastically sharing views through groups like the Youth Cultural Champions.
• Sixth-form provision is strong, with courses that “suit the interests and aspirations of students well” and build on key stage 4 learning.

Areas to improve

• Leaders must ensure all pupils experience the full curriculum, as a small number miss too much curriculum time due to intensive support for social or emotional difficulties.
• Leaders need to ensure behaviour is always well managed, as a few pupils sometimes interrupt learning and staff do not always manage this effectively.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective, with leaders carefully checking that adults employed or volunteering are suitable to work with children and staff knowing how to identify pupils at risk.
