Dorchester Middle School

Overview

Dorchester Middle School has undergone significant positive changes under new leadership, creating a "calm, happy and respectful environment" where pupils feel safe and engaged. While attendance and behaviour are rated at a "strong standard," academic achievement in core subjects remains below national averages, particularly for disadvantaged pupils.

Strengths

• Attendance is excellent, with leaders working "forensically" to ensure it remains above the national average.
• The school culture is highly positive, with bullying being "not usual occurrences" and pupils feeling "safe and welcomed."
• Staff deliver a re-designed curriculum with high-quality teaching, and pupils with special educational needs receive "appropriate support."
• Personal development is cohesive, with pupils learning to manage their mental and physical health and participating in a "vast enrichment offer."
• Leaders have established a "positive culture" and strong relationships with parents, staff, and the community.

Areas to improve

• Teachers must provide "clarity and clear instruction" so pupils understand their next steps and avoid misconceptions.
• Strategies to teach foundational skills in spelling and handwriting need to be more "precise" to help pupils improve quickly.
• Leaders must evaluate support strategies to ensure disadvantaged pupils achieve better outcomes in published results.

Safeguarding

The safeguarding standards are met, with an "open culture in which safeguarding is everyone's responsibility" ensuring pupils are made safer and feel safe.
