Check the area around this school
41st of 60 primary schools in Tower Hamlets we can score, 66 in total — the rest without enough published data. Local and same-phase on purpose: a national table mostly measures who attends.
Narrow the comparison to schools whose pupils have similar backgrounds and it does better still — 7.1/10 against 2,594 of them, against 6.1/10 nationally. Both figures are results only, without the inspection grade. A lower figure here means a stronger comparison group, not a weaker school.
How this is worked out

What Ofsted said about English Martyrs Roman Catholic Primary School
Overview
English Martyrs Roman Catholic Primary School continues to be a good school, described by the community as a ‘big happy family’. Pupils thrive in a nurturing environment where they achieve well and demonstrate positive attitudes towards learning.
Strengths
- The curriculum is ‘ambitious, broad and rich’, with leaders carefully planning key facts and skills so pupils can ‘recall much of their past learning in detail’.
- Reading is a high priority; children learn phonics immediately and gain the skills to ‘read independently by the end of Year 2’.
- Mathematics is well taught, with pupils enjoying challenges and using ‘subject-specific vocabulary accurately’.
- Staff effectively identify and meet the needs of pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities, breaking learning into ‘small manageable steps’.
- The early years curriculum provides a ‘strong start’, with staff working closely to ensure children are well prepared for Reception.
Areas to improve
- In a few subjects, such as history, teachers’ subject knowledge is not consistently strong, and some staff need more guidance on delivering subject planning.
- Assessment checks in some subjects are not as helpful as in mathematics and English, meaning teachers do not always know which important knowledge pupils are remembering.
Safeguarding
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective, with staff receiving regular training and being ‘quick to act on any concerns’.
