Fairisle Infant and Nursery School

Overview

Pupils are described as "happy and well cared for" within an "inclusive and nurturing ethos" that fosters strong relationships with staff. The school maintains high expectations for learning and behaviour, resulting in pupils who demonstrate "impressive levels of confidence and independence" and achieve well across much of the curriculum.

Strengths

• The curriculum is "clear and appropriate" with a "sequenced learning journey" in every subject, particularly prioritising oracy and vocabulary.
• Reading support is effective, with staff using a consistent "phonics-based approach" that helps pupils read with "increasing fluency and confidence".
• Personal development is "exceptional", underpinned by a well-designed programme where pupils show "impressive levels of empathy" and engage in meaningful debates on social issues.
• Teachers use questioning effectively to check learning and address misconceptions, ensuring pupils "remember key knowledge" through routine recaps.
• Parents feel part of the "Fairisle family" and appreciate clear communications and invitations to school events.

Areas to improve

• In a few subjects, the school lacks clear oversight of pupil progress, meaning "gaps in pupils’ knowledge and skills are not identified and addressed".
• Persistent absence remains high for some pupils, causing them to miss "valuable learning time" and wider opportunities.

Safeguarding

The report states that "the arrangements for safeguarding are effective."
