Gomer Infant School

Overview

Pupils at Gomer Infant School are described as eager learners who “rush into school each morning” with mutual excitement. The report highlights an “exceptional offer to support pupils’ personal growth” and notes that pupils generally achieve well, particularly in reading where they “exceed the national average for the phonics screening check.”

Strengths

• Pupils demonstrate strong personal development, feeling safe and managing their feelings effectively through resources like ‘comfort corners’ and ‘colour monster’ posters.
• The curriculum is “ambitious for all pupils,” with clear definitions of learning from Reception onwards and effective support for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).
• Reading is treated as a high priority with “clear and effective systems,” ensuring pupils learn sounds in a specific order and apply them confidently.
• Attendance is promoted effectively through rigorous tracking, resulting in all pupils attending well.
• Leadership is effective, with governors who are “highly informed, well trained and consistently challenge the school to do its best.”

Areas to improve

• The report states that “in some instances, the teaching that pupils receive does not consistently reflect the planned curriculum precisely,” meaning not all pupils learn as well as they could. The school must ensure planned content is taught consistently and accurately by all staff.

Safeguarding

The report states that “the arrangements for safeguarding are effective.”
