Greenhaugh Primary School

Overview

Greenhaugh Primary School continues to be a good school, described as a ‘friendly, caring and welcoming’ environment where pupils are happy and feel safe. Leaders have high expectations for behaviour and have successfully addressed previous areas for improvement, ensuring strong relationships with families.

Strengths

• Pupils enjoy a curriculum tailored to the local area, with a particular emphasis on developing a ‘love of reading’ through a well-taught phonics programme.
• Mathematics teaching is strong, with teachers possessing robust subject knowledge and ensuring pupils retain vocabulary and challenge their thinking.
• Pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) receive targeted support and clear learning plans, enabling them to learn well.
• Staff workload and well-being are prioritised by leaders, and parents are overwhelmingly positive, feeling that children are ‘at the heart of everything staff do’.

Areas to improve

• In some foundation subjects, such as history, curriculum plans do not clearly identify the essential knowledge pupils need to learn, leading to poor retention.
• Lessons in these subjects sometimes focus on activity completion rather than intended learning; leaders must ensure the focus remains on the planned curriculum.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective, with a strong culture of keeping pupils safe, knowledgeable staff, and effective systems for reporting concerns.
