Greenside School

Overview

Greenside School has taken effective action to maintain the standards identified at its previous inspection. Pupils enjoy attending the school, benefiting from a warm welcome, positive relationships, and a curriculum tailored to their specific needs. The school prepares pupils well for adulthood through community visits and work experience, though some inconsistencies in teaching expertise and monitoring remain.

Strengths

• Pupils receive a "warm welcome" and build confidence through a "well-considered personal, social, health and economic curriculum," including individualised swimming sessions.
• Staff have high expectations and use "well-chosen resources" to help pupils secure important knowledge, such as in mathematics.
• Communication is the "bedrock of the curriculum," with staff supporting pupils to interact using pictures, symbols, or technology.
• Reading is central to all pathways, with "carefully chosen sensory activities" making story times special and engaging.
• The school prioritises attendance and works collaboratively with families to "break down the barriers" to regular attendance.

Areas to improve

• The school must ensure all staff have the expertise to match support precisely to pupils’ needs, addressing inconsistencies in subject knowledge and pedagogy.
• Leaders and governors need to establish effective ways to monitor the impact of the school’s work to better identify priorities for improvement.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.
