Gunnerside Methodist Junior School

Overview

Gunnerside Methodist Primary School continues to be a good school where every pupil is "valued and nurtured." Leaders maintain high aspirations, fostering a calm, orderly environment where pupils are "kind and courteous" and feel very safe.

Strengths

• Pupils’ behaviour is "exemplary," with bullying being "very rare" and children interacting respectfully from early years.
• The curriculum is well-developed, with subject leaders creating detailed plans that help pupils build knowledge and skills over time in subjects like art and mathematics.
• Early reading is a high priority; phonics teaching is "consistent and effective," enabling pupils to read unfamiliar words with confidence and fluency.
• The school is "very inclusive," ensuring all pupils, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), access the full curriculum offer.
• Parents are "overwhelmingly positive," noting that staff are approachable and caring, while staff report a strong culture of collaboration.

Areas to improve

• Leaders must ensure they have a "precise understanding" of how to support some pupils with SEND to make stronger progress.
• Leaders and staff do not always provide the "most accurate and prompt support" for some pupils, with needs not always being rapidly identified.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective, with the designated safeguarding lead keeping timely records and making necessary referrals, though not all staff are fully clear on recognising vulnerable behaviours linked to local issues.
