Hartcliffe Nursery School and Children's Centre

Overview

Hartcliffe Nursery School has undergone "rapid improvement" under its interim headteacher, moving from a previous inadequate rating to secure "Good" judgements across all key areas. The report highlights a "caring and supportive" environment where children are "confident and independent learners," driven by a curriculum that prioritises communication and language.

Strengths

• Staff create a "positive tone" with welcoming routines, ensuring children feel safe and behave well.
• The curriculum "clarifies the knowledge and skills" children need, with communication and language at its "bedrock."
• Staff are "closely attuned to children’s needs," providing effective support for those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).
• Children demonstrate "effective learning characteristics," such as kindness, sharing, and independence during play and meal times.
• Governors work effectively with the school, checking that actions make a "tangible difference" to children.

Areas to improve

• The school must ensure all staff consistently engage in "high-quality interactions" to better extend children’s speech and language.
• Staff require further development in "subject-specific guidance" for certain areas of learning to build children’s knowledge as securely as in established subjects.
