Haygrove School is rated as ‘Good’ overall, with ‘Outstanding’ leadership and management. Despite the significant challenge of the main building being deemed unsafe, leaders have maintained an “unwavering focus on providing pupils with a high-quality education.” The school has strengthened its curriculum and supports pupils’ well-being effectively.

Strengths

• Leaders have “overhauled the curriculum to ensure that it is suitably broad and ambitious,” resulting in more pupils studying English Baccalaureate subjects.
• Staff receive “high-quality training and development opportunities,” enabling them to adapt teaching for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).
• There is a “strong pastoral system that supports pupils’ well-being,” with a zero-tolerance approach to bullying and discriminatory language.
• Reading is a “high priority,” with daily morning reading sessions helping pupils become “fluent and confident readers.”
• Pupils benefit from a “carefully designed programme to support pupils' personal development,” including lessons on healthy relationships and mental health.

Areas to improve

• Teaching must “systematically check learning so that gaps in learning are addressed for all pupils,” as current checks do not always identify where pupils are stuck.
• The school should continue developing work to support a minority of pupils, particularly disadvantaged ones, to “attend school more regularly” and catch up with lost learning.
