Heaton School

Overview

Heaton School is a special school for pupils with SEND, where students are "well cared for" and enjoy "positive working relationships with staff." The report notes that while behaviour and personal development are strong, the quality of education and leadership require improvement due to inconsistencies in curriculum planning and assessment.

Strengths

• Pupils display "positive attitudes towards their learning," concentrate well, and "cooperate well with each other."
• The sixth-form provision is "Good," with students successfully prepared for adulthood through practical life skills and employment opportunities.
• Staff are "well trained to support pupils with their behaviour," creating a "calm, positive start to the day."
• Pupils receive a "wide variety of experiences and trips," consolidating life skills in the community.
• Governors are enhancing systems to monitor effectiveness and are "mindful of staff’s workload and well-being."

Areas to improve

• The school must "finalise its curriculum thinking swiftly" in subjects where there is insufficient clarity around knowledge and skills.
• Curriculum leadership needs further development in some subjects to ensure consistent implementation and effective evaluation.
• Staff require better training and subject knowledge to teach phonics and reading skills effectively, ensuring books are matched to pupils’ abilities.

Safeguarding

The report states that "the arrangements for safeguarding are effective."
