Overview

Hengoed Primary School is described as having a "very caring and inclusive atmosphere" where pupils enjoy learning and are enthusiastic. The report highlights that pupils make strong progress in literacy, numeracy, and digital skills when teaching is "purposeful and consistent," though inconsistencies in teaching quality remain.

Strengths

• Pupils benefit from "positive working relationships" with staff, fostering a supportive environment.
• The school successfully promotes learning both in classrooms and outdoors, ensuring provision is "equitable across the school."
• Pupils demonstrate high levels of resilience, perseverance, and respect for others, taking responsibility for their own well-being.
• The executive headteacher provides "strong and effective leadership," sharing a purposeful vision with staff.
• Leaders evaluate school work thoroughly to plan for improvements, contributing to a "thriving whole-school ethos."

Areas to improve

• Ensure new leadership practices improve the "consistency and effectiveness of teaching across the school."
• Provide better opportunities to promote pupils’ "independent skills," as staff do not always allow pupils to use them often enough.
• Improve the "strategic leadership of the governing body," which was judged to be only satisfactory.

Safeguarding

The report states that all staff promote a "positive ethos of support and care for pupils in all areas of the school," encouraging pupils to take responsibility for their own well-being and behaviour extremely well.
