Check the area around this school
309th of 337 primary schools in Hertfordshire we can score, 398 in total — the rest without enough published data. Local and same-phase on purpose: a national table mostly measures who attends.
Its results hold up when the comparison narrows to schools whose pupils have similar backgrounds — 0.5/10 against 1,312 of them, against 0.7/10 nationally. So this is not simply a reflection of who attends. Both figures are results only, without the inspection grade. A lower figure here means a stronger comparison group, not a weaker school.
How this is worked out
| Measure | Percentile | Weight | Adds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Expected standard (RWM) 2023/24 | 33.0 · 4 | 40% | 0.17 |
| Ofsted | 52 | 35% | 1.82 |
| Higher standard (RWM) 2023/24 | 0.0 · 10 | 25% | 0.26 |
Each measure is read as a position among comparable schools, so a school in the middle of the country scores 5. Full method.

What Ofsted said about Hertford St Andrew CofE Primary School
Overview
This ungraded inspection found that aspects of the school’s work “may not be as strong as at the time of the previous inspection,” triggering a future graded inspection. Despite this, pupils enjoy a “calm and welcoming atmosphere” where they are “very well cared for by staff.” Recent curriculum changes are raising expectations, but these improvements have “yet to have the impact the school intends” across all subjects.
Strengths
- Pupils feel safe and included, with unkindness dealt with effectively and a strong sense of community.
- Teaching in reading and mathematics is “consistently well” delivered, with most pupils becoming confident readers.
- Provision for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) is improving, with accurate identification and personalised support.
- Attendance is improving through targeted strategies, such as a morning “walking bus.”
- Younger pupils experience “purposeful learning” and make a secure start in a well-organised environment.
Areas to improve
- Leaders must ensure effective refinements to the curriculum in subjects other than English and mathematics so pupils learn equally well across the board.
- Teachers need to implement agreed approaches for checking pupils’ understanding consistently to prevent misconceptions from carrying forward.
- Staff must apply high behaviour expectations consistently throughout the day, particularly during afternoon sessions, to prevent lost learning time.
Safeguarding
The report states that “the arrangements for safeguarding are effective.”
