Hetton Lyons Nursery School

Overview

Hetton Lyons Nursery School continues to be a good school, offering a "family-friendly atmosphere" with highly positive relationships between staff, parents, and children. Leaders maintain clear behaviour expectations, resulting in children who display "exemplary behaviours" and independence in daily routines.

Strengths

• Staff create a nurturing environment where children enjoy "exciting outdoor areas," including a ‘forest school’ and trim trails.
• Leaders effectively develop children’s language skills through targeted training and resources like ‘vocabulary bags’.
• Provision for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) is effective, with tailored advice from external professionals and clear individual support plans.
• Children’s personal development is impressive, with opportunities to learn about British values, respect for others, and environmental issues.
• Staff benefit from a "strong team ethos" and supportive leadership that helps manage workload.

Areas to improve

• The delivery of the mathematics curriculum is sometimes "disjointed" with an unclear sequence of learning; leaders must ensure the curriculum is well-defined and staff receive training in sequencing early mathematics.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective, with clear procedures in place and high-quality external training ensuring staff can identify and report concerns quickly.
