Hywel Dda Primary School

Overview

Hywel Dda Primary School is described as a "caring and supportive" environment where "nearly all pupils thrive" and develop "positive attitudes to learning." The school delivers a "broad and inclusive curriculum" with a "strong Welsh ethos," enabling most pupils to make "good progress" in literacy, numeracy, and digital skills. While leadership is rigorous and family engagement is extensive, the report highlights challenges regarding pupil independence and exclusion rates.

Strengths

• A "positive reading culture" drives significant progress in pupils’ reading skills.
• Staff provide "effective range of interventions" for pupils with emotional and well-being needs.
• The school "engages exceptionally well with their families" and the local community.
• Most pupils develop as "confident and enthusiastic Welsh speakers."
• Governors provide "valuable support" to leaders in identifying strengths and priorities.

Areas to improve

• Reduce the number of fixed-term exclusions, which remains "too high."
• Develop pupils as "independent, creative thinkers and learners," as teachers sometimes "over-direct learning."
• Manage the "high volume of traffic" at the start and end of the day to ensure pupil safety.

Safeguarding

The school has a "sound safeguarding ethos" with staff clearly understanding their roles, though senior leaders recognise that traffic outside the school gates "poses a risk to the safety of pupils."
