Overview

Inclusion Hampshire is an independent specialist college for 16- to 25-year-olds with social, emotional and mental health needs or autism. The inspection judged overall effectiveness as ‘Requires improvement’, citing low attendance, inconsistent teaching quality, and limited progress in moving learners into employment or further education.

Strengths

• Learners benefit from “high levels of individual support and care” and appreciate the “calm, nurturing surroundings” that help manage anxiety.
• Staff provide “very effective individual support” to help learners manage personal relationships and understand healthy boundaries.
• The curriculum has been redesigned into three clear pathways, including a new provision in Basingstoke to prepare learners for employment.
• Learners treat each other with respect, showing “empathy and understanding towards their peers’ individual needs and differences.”
• Governors receive useful reports and recognise the need to support the new leadership team in implementing the improvement plan.

Areas to improve

• Improve the quality of teaching across the curriculum, ensuring teachers have sufficient specialist knowledge and correct learner errors.
• Ensure teachers accurately identify learners’ starting points and assess progress against specific individual learning goals rather than generic targets.
• Increase attendance and punctuality, and ensure learners have an effective understanding of how to protect themselves against radicalisation.
