Killen Primary School

Overview

This report details a Sustaining Improvement Inspection conducted in June 2018, which was significantly limited by industrial action. Because staff refused to cooperate with inspectors, the ETI could not fully evaluate the school’s capacity for improvement or the quality of learning and teaching. Consequently, the inspectorate states it is “unable to assure parents/carers... of the quality of education being provided for the children.”

Strengths

• Year 6 pupils spoke positively about the “friendly working relationships within the school.”
• Children reported that they “feel safe in school” and are aware of procedures if they have safety concerns.
• The school provided evidence that safeguarding arrangements “reflect broadly the guidance from the Department of Education.”

Areas to improve

• The school must review child protection policies, including intimate care and relationships education, to ensure they “reflect more fully the most recent guidance from the DE.”
• All governors need to receive the necessary safeguarding training.
• The school needs to review “security arrangements of the access to and within the school grounds.”

Safeguarding

The report notes that while arrangements broadly reflect Department of Education guidance and children feel safe, there is a need to update specific policies and ensure governor training, though the ETI was “unable to evaluate fully the outworking of the arrangements for safeguarding in the school” due to the industrial action.
