Strengths

• The school delivers a “highly ambitious curriculum” that is “carefully considered and sequenced,” ensuring pupils build on prior learning and deepen their understanding.
• Teachers are “very knowledgeable” and explain new concepts “clearly and precisely,” routinely checking pupil understanding to adapt teaching where needed.
• Reading is a clear priority, with a “consistent, effective approach to the teaching of phonics” that helps children get off to a “strong start.”
• Staff work closely with parents and external agencies to support pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), providing “carefully tailored resources” that help them achieve individual targets.
• Pupils develop into “responsible citizens” who are “respectful of, and welcome, people’s differences,” contributing positively to the local community.

Areas to improve

• The curriculum does not yet provide sufficient opportunity for pupils to practise letter formation and spelling, meaning some do not become “sufficiently fluent in this key knowledge.”
• The school must continue to refine and embed its new sequence for teaching writing so that children in the early years and key stage 1 gain enough practice to master these skills.
