Kingfisher School

Overview

Kingfisher School is a specialist setting for pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs, where leaders provide a "clear purpose" focused on care, education and stability. The report describes a school where pupils feel "safe, respected and able to thrive," benefiting from an "ambitious curriculum" and "thoughtful, strategic" leadership that addresses individual barriers to learning.

Strengths

• Staff deliver "clear, calm and purposeful" lessons, using targeted support to help pupils with disrupted previous schooling rebuild confidence and secure knowledge.
• Attendance has improved significantly as staff work patiently with families to rebuild routines, resulting in many pupils attending "far more consistently."
• Behaviour is described as "calm, respectful and improving," with staff responding with understanding to help pupils regulate emotions and repair relationships.
• A "highly personalised" mentoring programme and strong pastoral oversight help pupils manage their emotions and access the curriculum successfully.
• Governors provide "effective challenge and support," maintaining close oversight of safeguarding, attendance and alternative provision.

Areas to improve

• Leaders should further develop the vocational curriculum on the main site to offer a wider range of pathways reflecting pupils’ interests and ambitions.
• Leaders should strengthen mental-health support for pupils educated off-site to ensure quality and oversight match the consistency of support on the main site.

Safeguarding

The safeguarding standards are met, with leaders establishing an "open culture in which safeguarding is everyone's responsibility" and concerns are actively identified and managed.
