Kinlochleven High School

Overview

The inspection identifies significant weaknesses in learning, teaching, assessment, and raising attainment. However, it notes a positive start by the newly appointed headteacher, who has secured broad support from the community. The school requires additional support and will undergo a further inspection within one year.

Strengths

• The headteacher is “making a positive start to providing clear strategic direction” and has “won the support of almost all parents, staff and young people.”
• Young people are described as “respectful, articulate and are keen to learn and achieve well.”
• Pupils appreciate how staff support helps them “make progress in their learning.”

Areas to improve

• Senior leaders and staff must improve the “quality and consistency of planning and delivering high-quality learning and teaching” to ensure progressive, creative learning at the right difficulty level.
• Staff need to develop a “thorough, shared understanding of assessment and national expectations” and maintain high expectations for pupils’ potential.
• The school should introduce a “wider range of opportunities” for skill acquisition and raise attainment to be “at least in line, or above national standards.”
