Kirkburton CofE (VA) First School

Overview

The report describes a school where leaders have created a "cohesive culture" and pupils experience a "real sense of belonging." Inspectors found that the school is fulfilling the "expected standard" across all evaluation categories, with pupils generally achieving well and feeling safe.

Strengths

• Pupils "generally achieve well across the curriculum," with particular success in mathematics following a recent curriculum update.
• Attendance rates are high, supported by "bespoke support" that helps families overcome barriers to regular attendance.
• Staff maintain "high expectations for pupils' behaviour," resulting in a respectful environment where bullying "rarely happens."
• Leaders "swiftly and accurately identify pupils who face barriers to their learning," ensuring effective support for those with special educational needs.
• The early years curriculum is "well designed," with effective phonics teaching helping children develop early reading knowledge quickly.

Areas to improve

• Leaders must ensure that checks on pupils' understanding consistently "identify and address their misconceptions" to prevent gaps in knowledge.
• The new writing curriculum requires further embedding to ensure pupils are supported to "achieve all that they can in writing."
• Staff in the early years should maximise opportunities to engage children in "high-quality interactions" to extend learning.

Safeguarding

The safeguarding standards are met, with leaders establishing an "open culture in which safeguarding is everyone's responsibility" and concerns actively managed.
