Lee Common Church of England School

Overview

Pupils “delight in coming to this small village school,” where they are supported by “kind” teachers who make lessons “fun.” The school fosters an environment where children “flourish in body, mind and spirit,” resulting in pupils who are “resilient and confident learners” by the end of key stage one.

Strengths

• Teachers possess “secure subject knowledge” and break learning into “smaller steps” so pupils’ knowledge “builds securely over time.”
• Reading is taught well, with phonics introduced early and books matched to sounds, ensuring pupils are “fluent readers” by Year 2.
• Staff effectively adapt the curriculum for pupils with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND), enabling them to “learn the same knowledge as their peers.”
• Assessment is used effectively to address misconceptions, ensuring “no-one falls behind.”
• Pupils behave “calmly,” showing “respect for their teachers” and practising techniques to manage their emotions and focus.

Areas to improve

• In some new curriculum areas, the knowledge pupils need to learn is “less precisely identified,” meaning they do not always “make secure connections between the concepts they are taught.”
• The school should ensure intended learning is “identified equally well across the whole of the curriculum” so pupils learn consistently well.

Safeguarding

The report states that “the arrangements for safeguarding are effective.”
