Little Gate College

Overview

Little Gate College is an independent specialist college in East Sussex providing tailored education for students aged 16 to 25 with special educational needs and/or disabilities. The monitoring visit found that leaders and managers have made "reasonable progress" in designing relevant learning programmes and ensuring effective safeguarding arrangements. The college demonstrates a strong focus on preparing students for employment and independent living through a purposeful curriculum and high-quality work placements.

Strengths

• Leaders are "highly ambitious" and have created a "coherent programme of learning" that aligns with local employment needs and student aspirations.
• Staff use expertise to tailor learning effectively, helping students make "good progress" and gain confidence in essential skills such as literacy, numeracy, and personal budgeting.
• Students benefit from "high-quality work placements" and strategies that promote independence, such as travel training and the careful reduction of support over time.
• Safeguarding arrangements are robust, with well-trained staff who "identify concerns quickly" and collaborate effectively with external agencies.

Areas to improve

• In a small number of instances, support staff do not always provide students with "sufficient time to answer questions or complete tasks before helping them," which slows their learning.

Safeguarding

The report states that "well-trained and experienced safeguarding staff make sure students are safe," ensuring appropriate training, diligent recording of concerns, and effective collaboration with external agencies.
