Lockington Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School

Overview

Leaders maintain high expectations, fostering a culture where pupils behave with "consistently high levels of respect" and show "extremely positive attitudes to their learning." The school provides a warm, nurturing environment with strong relationships between staff and pupils, supported by opportunities for cultural exchange and enterprise projects.

Strengths

• Pupils demonstrate "highly motivated" behaviour and learn about different cultures through links with international schools.
• Mathematics teaching is a strength, with pupils enjoying problem-solving and applying knowledge in various contexts.
• Leaders have developed curriculum cycles for mixed-age classes to ensure progression, particularly in geography.
• A new phonics programme is in place, with early years children exposed to nursery rhymes and structured teaching.
• Governors actively challenge leaders to ensure decisions, such as new curriculum programmes, are in pupils’ best interests.

Areas to improve

• Leaders must ensure all adults, including volunteers, receive training to effectively support pupils’ early reading using the systematic phonics approach.
• Leaders should refine curriculum thinking to establish clear links between the early years and key stage 1 curricula, ensuring early learning lays proper foundations for future study.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective, with leaders remaining "extra vigilant" due to low numbers of concerns and providing specific road safety training for pupils.
