Overview

Lydgate Infant School continues to be a good school, where pupils enter happy and are ready to learn. Leaders prioritise attendance and ensure a warm welcome, with staff who know pupils very well. The curriculum is carefully sequenced to prepare children for transition to junior school, enriched by the diverse nature of the community.

Strengths

• Pupils receive a high level of care, and behaviour is generally positive, with bullying described as rare.
• The curriculum is well-sequenced across subjects, such as computing, where pupils build knowledge from Reception through to Year 2.
• Reading is a high priority, with consistent phonics teaching and detailed systems to support pupils in developing the ‘will’ and ‘skills’ to read.
• Leaders plan appropriately for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities, ensuring they learn alongside peers and do not miss out on extra opportunities.
• Staff appreciate the renewed approach to well-being and workload, feeling proud to work at the school.

• Leaders must develop a consistent approach to assessment in all foundation subjects to identify gaps or misconceptions in learning.
• Leaders should ensure all pupils have access to a greater variety of opportunities to support them in becoming active and responsible citizens.
