Marshlands School

Overview

Marshlands School has taken effective action to maintain the standards identified at the previous inspection. The school places promoting pupils’ personal development at the heart of its work, fostering independence and high-quality learning. Leaders are aware of areas requiring further improvement and are actively working to address them.

Strengths

• The school effectively identifies pupils’ academic and social starting points to determine suitable curriculum pathways that are regularly reviewed.
• A ‘total communication approach’ underpins learning, with early reading prioritised as a crucial life skill.
• Personal development is described as ‘exceptional’, with a strong focus on kindness, healthy lifestyles, and personal safety embedded in school life.
• Staff work seamlessly as a team, reducing workload and supporting behaviour management, while governors provide balanced support and challenge.
• Parents are ‘overwhelmingly positive’ about the support their children receive and its impact on home life.

Areas to improve

• The school should address inconsistencies in curriculum implementation where learning activities are not closely matched to pupils’ needs, which can hinder independent learning.
• Staff should avoid giving pupils ‘too much help’ in some instances, as this can hinder their growth as independent learners.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.
