Minehead First School

Overview

Minehead First School is rated as ‘Good’ across all inspection categories, marking significant improvement from its previous ‘Requires improvement’ judgement. The report highlights a ‘caring and inclusive’ environment where pupils enjoy school, attend well, and benefit from ‘high-quality pastoral care’. Strong leadership has driven rapid curriculum improvements, particularly in early reading and mathematics.

Strengths

• Pupils demonstrate ‘warm and respectful’ relationships with staff and live up to school values such as ‘community, ambition and respect’.
• The curriculum is ‘ambitious’ and ‘clearly sequenced’ in most subjects, allowing pupils to build knowledge effectively, notably in mathematics where they use ‘sophisticated vocabulary’.
• Early reading is prioritised with a successful phonics programme; pupils who fall behind receive ‘swift and targeted support’ to catch up quickly.
• Provision for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) is ‘highly tailored’ and meets individual targets linked to education, health and care plans.
• Personal development is supported through a well-matched PSHE curriculum, helping pupils manage their feelings using ‘zones of regulation’.

Areas to improve

• In some subjects, including history, the school has not identified ‘essential knowledge’ pupils must know and remember, preventing them from making connections between facts.
• The school must ensure ‘precise knowledge’ is identified in these areas so pupils can build on their learning over time.

Safeguarding

The report states that ‘the arrangements for safeguarding are effective’.
