Morpeth Stobhillgate First School

Overview

The report describes a school that provides a "calm, welcoming environment" where pupils feel "safe and valued." Leaders have established a clear vision resulting in consistent teaching approaches, with the early years provision judged as "outstanding." Overall, pupils achieve highly and demonstrate exceptional behaviour, though some lesson content is occasionally too demanding for a minority of students.

Strengths

• The early years setting is "outstanding," fostering curiosity and independence through high-quality activities and effective partnerships with subject leaders.
• Pupils display "exemplary" behaviour, being "kind, considerate and respectful," while staff maintain positive relationships that make children feel included.
• The reading curriculum is highly effective, with staff skilled in teaching letter sounds, enabling pupils to become "confident, fluent readers."
• Pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) "achieve well," receiving tailored support such as visual aids and sensory resources to access the curriculum.
• Personal development is strong, with pupils taught to be "empathetic and thoughtful" through community engagement and a curriculum focusing on diversity and inclusion.

Areas to improve

• Staff must ensure lesson content is "carefully matched to pupils’ need," as tasks are sometimes "too challenging," causing confusion for a small number of pupils who fail to secure intended knowledge.
