Movilla High School

Overview

This follow-up inspection confirms that Movilla High School has demonstrated improvement since the previous visit, particularly in English outcomes and mathematics provision. The curriculum is now described as "broader and more responsive," better meeting pupils’ needs, with the school successfully closing the attainment gap for disadvantaged students.

Strengths

• The curriculum offers a "wider range of GCSE and level 2 qualifications," including English literature, and has been enhanced by the appointment of subject specialists.
• Pupils engage "enthusiastically in well-planned learning activities" and respond well to "active learning and creative opportunities."
• Staff professional learning has improved planning, differentiation, and feedback, with pupils using "retrieval techniques to reinforce learning."
• There is a strong "family ethos" and positive community links, with pupils valuing the support and encouragement of teachers.
• The school has extended specialist provisions for pupils with autism and established nurture classes with Education Authority support.

Areas to improve

• The school must promote "better engagement in co-curricular opportunities" to enhance pupils’ wider skills and aspirations.
• Further multi-agency support is required to help pupils whose "attendance is a cause for concern."
• Inspectors noted "variation in the extent of the impact" of staff professional learning on pupil outcomes across all lessons.

Safeguarding

The report states that "arrangements for child protection align to the current statutory guidance," though the school must update the staff handbook for substitute teachers and classroom assistants.
