Mulberry Wood Wharf Primary School

Overview

Pupils ‘thrive’ at this school, benefiting from a supportive community where they are ‘seen, valued and cared for’. The report highlights an ‘ambitious and well sequenced’ curriculum and ‘exemplary’ behaviour, creating a calm environment conducive to learning. While early years provision and personal development are outstanding, inconsistencies in checking for misconceptions hinder some pupils’ progress.

Strengths

• Early years provision is ‘Outstanding’, with a ‘nurturing and stimulating environment’ that ensures children are ‘thoroughly prepared’ for Year 1.
• Behaviour is ‘exemplary’, with pupils showing ‘respect for each other’s ideas’ and engaging vigorously in debate.
• Personal development is ‘exceptional’, fostering deep understanding of diversity, equality, and healthy relationships.
• Reading is taught well from the start, with ‘precise’ phonics instruction ensuring pupils become ‘fluent, confident and enthusiastic readers’.
• Staff receive strong support from leaders, who manage workload effectively and provide opportunities for professional development.

Areas to improve

• Checks on learning do not consistently identify ‘errors and misconceptions’, leading to gaps in understanding that hinder progress. The school must ensure staff have the expertise to address these consistently.
