NCEA Castle School

Overview

NCEA Castle School is described as a “warm and welcoming place” where pupils feel safe and relationships are “extremely positive and respectful.” The report highlights that leaders are ambitious for all pupils to achieve their best, with a strong focus on well-being, inclusivity, and individual communication needs.

Strengths

• Pupils enjoy school and are encouraged to “shine their light,” with bullying reported as rare.
• The curriculum offers tailored pathways that develop communication, reading, mathematical, and creative skills.
• Staff work closely with external professionals, such as therapists, to support pupils with complex needs.
• New assessment processes help staff track “small steps of progress” and plan next steps effectively.
• The early years environment provides a “good foundation” by establishing calming routines.

Areas to improve

• Leaders must ensure robust systems are in place to check that the curriculum is securely embedded, as quality assurance processes are not yet well established.
• The personal development programme needs refining so pupils experience a wider range of opportunities and learn more about “fundamental British values” and life in modern Britain.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective, with staff well-trained to understand pupils’ vulnerabilities and concerns handled appropriately by leaders.
