Orion Mead Road

Overview

Mead Road Infant School is a highly effective establishment where pupils are “very proud to be part of the Mead Road family.” The school fosters a culture of high expectations and “exemplary” behaviour, underpinned by core values of “determination, pride and curiosity.” Leaders have created a sharp focus on learning, ensuring pupils are “fully engaged in lessons” and achieve well across the curriculum.

Strengths

• Early years provision is outstanding, with an “engaging and stimulating environment” that maximises learning opportunities and helps children settle quickly.
• Reading is a clear priority, supported by “high-quality daily phonics sessions” and well-matched books, ensuring pupils develop a strong foundation in literacy.
• Pupils’ personal development is excellent, facilitated by the ‘This is Me’ curriculum which explicitly teaches character development, emotional management, and respect.
• Behaviour is “exemplary,” with well-embedded routines like ‘legendary lines’ ensuring calm and orderly movement around the school.
• Pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) are “well supported” and fully included in all aspects of school life alongside their peers.

Areas to improve

• In some foundation subjects, the precise knowledge and skills required are not as clearly defined as in core subjects, leading to lessons lacking a “sharp focus” on core learning.
• Assessment checks in the wider curriculum are not yet established with the same precision as in mathematics and reading, meaning teachers cannot effectively identify gaps in pupils’ understanding.

Safeguarding

The report states that “the arrangements for safeguarding are effective.”
