Orion School

Overview

Orion School provides a supportive environment for pupils with social, emotional and mental health difficulties, helping them to re-engage with education and rebuild confidence. While safeguarding standards are met and personal development is strong, the report identifies that independent school standards for the quality of education, welfare, and leadership are not currently met due to inconsistencies in teaching and monitoring.

Strengths

• Staff build "strong, trusting relationships" with pupils, understanding their needs and anxieties well to help them feel "valued" and safe.
• The school offers a "well-planned programme" for personal development, including relevant careers guidance and work experience that prepares pupils for adulthood.
• Inclusion is effective, with staff using detailed information to adapt teaching and remove barriers for pupils with special educational needs.
• Pupils enjoy practical subjects like motor vehicle studies, which help develop "confidence and ability" through clearly sequenced learning.

Areas to improve

• Leaders must ensure teaching is "consistently adapted to meet pupils’ needs" and that assessment information is used precisely to address gaps in understanding.
• Attendance analysis is not used effectively to target support for persistently absent pupils, limiting the school’s ability to improve attendance rates.
• Systems to monitor curriculum and teaching priorities are "not yet effective," and there are insufficient trained staff to administer first aid, failing to meet independent school standards.

Safeguarding

The safeguarding standards are met, with leaders establishing an open culture where concerns are actively identified and managed, ensuring pupils feel safe.
