Otley Street Community Nursery School

Overview

Otley Street Community Nursery School has taken effective action to maintain the standards identified at the previous inspection. Children receive “exceptional care and support” and feel “very happy and safe” in their nursery environment. The school continues to provide a high-quality early years education with strong routines and a clear curriculum.

Strengths

• Children are “keen to come in and get started on their learning” and behave “exceptionally well throughout the day.”
• Staff are “expert in teaching children how to be independent” and successfully support early literacy and physical development.
• The curriculum is broken down into “small steps,” particularly improving early literacy and phonics readiness.
• Staff are “highly successful in supporting children in their physical development” through both large and small movements.
• Staff are “especially strong in knowing what children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) need help with,” ensuring these children feel a “strong sense of belonging.”

Areas to improve

• Ensure staff are confident to “focus on the intended knowledge” in areas where new or refined curriculums are being implemented, as teaching sometimes does not cover the most important knowledge.
• Follow through on plans to diversify enrichment experiences and ensure they “clearly match them to the curriculum” to provide sufficient depth of understanding about the world outside the nursery.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.
