Pathfield School

Overview

Pathfield School has taken effective action to maintain the standards identified at the previous inspection. The specialist school provides a supportive environment where pupils with profound and severe learning difficulties settle quickly and learn happily. Leadership remains focused and effective, ensuring high standards are sustained.

Strengths

• The curriculum is engaging and well-matched to pupils’ needs, with a strong emphasis on sensory stimulation and early reading.
• Staff are highly skilled in supporting communication, using methods such as Makaton or Braille, and fostering a "can-do attitude".
• Therapeutic sessions in music, art, and drama help pupils express emotions and regulate behaviour, enabling more formal learning.
• The school is an expert in meeting emotional needs, with exceptional support for families during transitions and for pupils in the ‘Pathways’ provision.
• Pupils gain valuable qualifications and prepare for independent adult lives through personalised courses and close work with local providers.

Areas to improve

• The school should ensure secondary pupils receive expert subject-specific teaching to fulfil their potential, as current staff expertise limits the depth of learning for some.
• The approach to developing mathematics for GCSE in the ‘Pathways’ provision is not yet well-established, and opportunities to study other subjects at this level are limited.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.
