Pengam Primary

Overview

Pengam Primary is described as a “vibrant and nurturing school” where pupils feel valued and approach learning with enthusiasm. Most pupils make good progress, particularly in mathematics and digital skills, though writing and independence require further development.

Strengths

• Pupils show “positive attitudes towards their learning” and are “happy and proud to attend” the school.
• Staff “know their children well” and work diligently to support all pupils, including those with additional learning needs.
• Pupils are becoming “confident mathematicians” with well-developed digital skills.
• Younger pupils “use the Welsh language effectively,” and there is a strong culture of mutual support across the federation.
• Pupils have many opportunities for leadership, with groups ensuring they have a “strong voice in the school.”

Areas to improve

• Staff should avoid being “too eager to intervene” to help pupils develop greater independence and critical thinking.
• Leaders must strengthen improvement processes to provide “suitable challenge for staff” regarding the impact of their teaching.
• The school needs to improve attendance, particularly for pupils eligible for free school meals, and enhance extended writing skills.
