Pirnmill Primary School

Overview

Education Scotland inspectors visited Pirnmill Primary School in May 2024 and evaluated its work using quality indicators. The report identifies significant weaknesses in "learning, teaching and assessment" and "raising attainment and achievement," noting that the school requires additional support and a further inspection within one year.

Strengths

• Children are described as "happy, friendly and keen to learn," benefiting from "positive and caring relationships" that support wellbeing.
• Senior leaders and staff demonstrate a strong understanding of the "island and rural context of the local community."
• The school maintains "strong partnerships" which help improve children's wellbeing and enhance learning experiences.

Areas to improve

• Staff should develop approaches to support children to "lead their own learning," including more regular, planned learning conversations.
• Senior leaders must develop an effective strategic approach to "raise attainment and achievement for all children," including embedding processes to plan, track, and assess learning.
• All staff should further develop the use of data to "track more clearly how much and how well children progress over time" to challenge them effectively.

Safeguarding

The report states that children benefit from "positive and caring relationships across the whole school community that support the wellbeing of children and families."
