Portgordon Primary School

Overview

The inspection team found a “friendly, warm and welcoming ethos” where children are respectful and eager to learn, supported by positive relationships across the community. However, the report evaluates both “Learning, teaching and assessment” and “Raising attainment and achievement” as “weak,” indicating significant concerns regarding educational quality and progress. Consequently, the school requires additional support and a further inspection within 12 months to ensure necessary improvements are made.

Strengths

• A “friendly, warm and welcoming ethos” is established across the school, with children demonstrating respect and an “eagerness to learn.”
• There are “positive relationships across the whole school community,” with senior leaders and staff knowing children and their families well.

Areas to improve

• Staff must raise attainment in literacy and numeracy for all children, ensuring they are “supported and challenged to make the best possible progress.”
• Senior leaders and staff should improve approaches to learning and teaching, specifically ensuring the “pace of learning is brisker.”
• Staff should continue collaborating with other schools to develop a “shared understanding of national standards.”

Safeguarding

The report does not explicitly detail safeguarding arrangements, noting instead that the Nursery Class was inspected separately by the Care Inspectorate within the past 18 months.
